Fossil organic carbon utilization in marine Arctic fjord sediments by subsurface micro-organisms

چکیده

Abstract Rock-derived or petrogenic organic carbon has traditionally been regarded as being non-bioavailable and bypassing the active cycle when eroded. However, it become apparent that this might not be so inert, especially in fjord systems where influxes can high, making its degradation another potential source of greenhouse gas emissions. The extent to which subsurface micro-organisms use is well constrained, despite impacts on global cycling. Here, we performed compound-specific radiocarbon analyses intact polar lipid–fatty acids live from marine sediments Hornsund Fjord, Svalbard. By means, estimate local bacterial communities utilize between 5 ± 2% 55 6% (average 25 16%) for their biosynthesis, providing evidence important role a substrate after sediment redeposition. We hypothesize lack sufficient recently synthesized primary production forces into utilization an alternative energy source. input subsequent by represents natural fossil emissions over geological timescales.

Hydrogen Utilization Potential in Subsurface Sediments

Subsurface microbial communities undertake many terminal electron-accepting processes, often simultaneously. Using a tritium-based assay, we measured the potential hydrogen oxidation catalyzed by hydrogenase enzymes in several subsurface sedimentary environments (Lake Van, Barents Sea, Equatorial Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico) with different predominant electron-acceptors. Hydrogenases constitute...

Utilization of S-adenosylmethionine by micro-organisms.

Shapiro, Stanley K. (Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Ill.). Utilization of S-adenosylmethionine by microorganisms. J. Bacteriol. 83:169-174. 1962.-Two types of mutants of Aerobacter aerogenes that utilize S-adenosylmethionine for growth are described. One type also responds to methionine, 5'methylthioadenosine, or a combination of homocysteine and S-methylmethionine. The second type of mu...

Evidence of Anomalously Low δ13C of Marine Organic Matter in an Arctic Fjord

Accurate estimation of relative carbon deposition (marine vs. terrestrial) is required for understanding the global carbon budget, particularly in the Arctic region, which holds disproportionate importance with respect to global carbon cycling. Although the sedimentary organic matter (SOM) concentration and its isotopic composition are important tools for such calculations, uncertainties loom o...

Archaea in Organic-Lean and Organic-Rich Marine Subsurface Sediments: An Environmental Gradient Reflected in Distinct Phylogenetic Lineages

Examining the patterns of archaeal diversity in little-explored organic-lean marine subsurface sediments presents an opportunity to study the association of phylogenetic affiliation and habitat preference in uncultured marine Archaea. Here we have compiled and re-analyzed published archaeal 16S rRNA clone library datasets across a spectrum of sediment trophic states characterized by a wide rang...
